Text | Data collected and researched by Dan SUL Data collected and researched by Dan SULLIVAN: SOURCE: Will of Charles MERRITT; listed in Historical Perspectives of Charles MERRITT by Dr. KING MERRITT; W-S library has copy; NC 929.2M Notes: MERRITT book says he came to VA in 1666 when he was about 14 years old; Charles worked 5 years as overseer for Benjamin HARRISON's plantation on Blackwater river; bought 300 acres on Deep Creek in Chowan/Bertie County area in March 1707; see copy of map in Dan SULLIVAN files In Chowan Precinct (later Chowan County) NC 1699 to 1723 by Margaret Hofmann, the following deed abstracts are found: #241, pg. 112: Peter Evans of CHowan Prect. carpenter to Charles MERRITT and Eliner, his wife, 10 march 1707 for sundry causes and considereations, one half of a tract of 600 acrees at ye mouth of Deep Creek and running up Chawanock River. All houses houses, gardens, orchards etc. Wit: Samuel Suklemore, William Stevens, his XMark. A 385. Charles MERRITT and wife Eleanor & Peter Evans to Richard Barefield of Virginia. April 16 1715. 30 pds. for 280 acres on the south side of the Chowan on Deep Creek by patent of Peter Evans. Adj. James Peek, John Fierybent. Wit: William Wilson, Peter Evans.
